Elden Returns

 

At Snetterton I found Stuart Riley who had arrived from the frozen North with the Elden MK: 8 Catnic Formula Ford.

 Scrutineering was a doddle and I went to qualifying with high hopes. However just as I went to leave the collecting area, Club Captain, Graham White, knelt down beside me and said that there had been complains about my ride height, aluminum radiator and shock absorbers, so would I like to practice, but not actually race.

This I did, finding the car easy to drive, but with rather odd weaving on the Revitt straight and an engine that felt a bit flat.

Back home I employed the services of Martin Greaves at Classic performance Engineering of Northampton, to sort out the castor, camber, toe in and ride height as he had done a brilliant job on my successful Lotus 20 formula junior racer.

I then went off to Cambridge to Mass Engines so Chris Conoley could run the car on the rolling road, to my surprise the engine seemed fine and ran flat out with 78 to 81 bhp showing on the dyno with peak power at 5,500 rpm.   It was a touch rich and only running 31 degrees of advance, but this was considered safe and left alone.

 

Next up Brands Hatch for the HSCC SuperPrix meeting and I qualified in tenth place with a 1.47 the same as George Fowler and Will Schryver. Up to third place all drivers where on 1.46 lap with the hot shots on 1.43.

I found the pedals too close and on the dwarf setting so moved the pedal box back an inch to the normal position.  The engine seemed to hang back with what seems like fuel starvation? Or surge?

In the race I was not tight enough and did not protect the inside line and so at every opportunity someone muscled past and so after a great battle with George Fowler in his Macon and Greg Thornton’s Titan I came 12th with a 1.45.

Will Schryver did not finish, but managed a 1.44 with Mick Lyons coming 3rd in his pretty Merlyn with a 1.42.

Winner Nelson Rowe beat Neil Fowler with an amazing time of 1.39.8.

   One big shock for me was not being able to drive around the minor problems with the car and it just shows how good all the other drivers were. Clearly the machinery has to be perfect for the given track and there is clearly a real knack to driving a car flat out at all times to get the best out of what little power you have.

 

More fettling required.
